Essential Oils

Rosemary is highly useful for memory improvement, notes herbalist Teresa Boardwine of Washington, Virginia. (See “Herbal Medicine” below.) It can also help with the brain drain of mental fatigue (what Boardwine calls “synapsus collapsus”) and keep you awake when you have to drive or do mental work such as studying late at night.

There are numerous ways you can use Rosemary. Sniff Rosemary essential oil right from the bottle or put a few drops of it on a handkerchief and inhale. When you're driving or studying, tuck the handkerchief into your collar or apply the drops directly on the collar (oil can leave spots). At home or at work, you can put a few drops in water in an aromatherapy burner for diffusion in the air around you. Or use Rosemary oil in your bath. Add 10 drops of Rosemary oil to a tub of warm water, or “innoculate” your bath salts (5 drops of rosemary oil to 1 cup of bath salts).

You can even put Rosemary essential oil in your shampoo. The active constituents of the essential oil will be absorbed through your skin, enter the bloodstream, and increase oxygen flow to your brain. Cineole, an antioxidant constituent of rosemary, is able to pass through the blood-brain barrier, and has shown promise in protecting against Alzheimer's, notes Boardwine. To a 16-ounce bottle of shampoo, add 10–20 drops of Rosemary essential oil. You can use rosemary tincture instead of the essential oil; 1/2 ounce to 16 ounces of shampoo.
